ThreatenedOil 2005 (40 x 80)
Threatened, is the début piece for the Strands Beach Collection of oil paintings. It was during its portrayal, started on November 19, 2004, that I knew I would paint more than just one Strands work.
I beheld this scene for the first time on Labor Day, 2004. The next two months found me with my pen and pad, cushioned in the sand inhaling this mystical place and its many faces. It set the stage for the book Im writing.
During this formative period I spoke to no one, but met everyone. As I wrote and observed, the grand Pacific Ocean, its waves, the sand, the rocks, the squirrels, and the mighty headland began to tell me things. I sojourned until a welcomed comfort set in an understanding, an acceptance, an oneness. It was not until then, two months later, I emerged with my giant canvas and giant easel. Another two weeks passed while I focused on the blackened canvas and the story it was going to tell. Four months after the brush and canvas met, the painting was finished. To commemorate the moment a party of friends joined in a signing celebration. It was a wonderful moment.
The title, Threatened, was conceived during my sojourn. Subconsciously, perhaps, I felt a threat to the very essence of this special place, the spirituality it encompassed and foresaw the looming storm portrayed. RLP
